Types of Skin Cancers

Protect Your Skin From Cancer

Cancer is very common, more so, skin cancer. Of all the cancers that someone can be diagnosed with, skin cancer by far is the one that is most diagnosed and treated. Treating skin cancer is necessary to ensure that the cancer doesn’t spread to other parts of the body. But, one of the best ways to “treat” skin cancer is to prevent it. True, sunscreen is a great option to protect your skin. However, sunscreen doesn’t last very long and can easily wash away with a few drops of water. If you are lounging at the beach or the pool, direct sunlight can still pierce your skin and could eventually develop into skin cancer.

What is Cancer

Skin cancer begins as one cell mutates and begins to grow at an alarming rate. A collection of cells that begin to grow is called a tumor. This tumor can either be malignant or benign. A tumor is only a serious threat if it is growing malignantly, meaning it will not stop growing and will infect other parts of the body. What is most terrifying about skin cancer is that it can grow at an alarming rate and infect parts of the body necessary for survival, such as your organs. Certain organs are more difficult to treat, which can cause big problems. For instance, chemotherapy might have to be implemented in order to treat the infected organs. Though chemotherapy has been known to work, not every case is successful.

Most Common Cancers

There are three types of skin cancers: basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and melanoma. If someone has a case of skin cancer, they mostly are basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas. When these types of cancers are malignant they can spread to other parts of the body. Luckily, your skin offers you some clues if you have skin cancer. Irregularities are the best way to determine if you have a grouping of cancerous cells.

Two types of skin irregularities are dysplastic nevi and actinic keratosis. Dysplastic nevi are abnormal moles that can develop on your skin after intense sun exposure. These moles aren’t cancerous, but have the potential of being cancerous. Due to this possibility, it is always a good idea to get checked out if a mole has developed rapidly, suddenly.

Actinic keratosis is when your skin will appear to be red or brown and rough to the touch. When this occurs, your body might be signaling to you that you are at risk for SCC. Warning signs for SCC can also be nevi, or moles. Moles are very common. On average, a person has anywhere from 10 to 40 moles on their body. Not all moles are going to be cancerous, however, if you have a mole that has grown quickly and has an odd or raised texture, you will need to speak to a professional.

How to Treat Cancer

Due to the severity of skin cancer, it is never a smart decision to flirt with the consequences. Though it is easy to say you don’t need sunscreen or a hat, prevention is the best method. Without taking care of your skin from the sun, you may have to deal with the consequences of your actions later in your life. When you are out in the sun, it is important to shield yourself from the sun. The sun can be exhausting and dehydrating. Sitting under direct sunlight for hours can be draining on your body and do terrible things to your skin. Luckily, there are shades at beaches and pool resorts that will help guard you against the sun.
